Horror and death metal go hand and hand. White Chapel have perfectly captured the intensity of their brutality with the cover to “This Is Exile” by artist Colin Marks. In a truly tragic moment in the world of metal, Evile bass player Michael Alexander died while the band was on their European tour with Amon Amarth. He was taken ill suddenly and rushed to a hospital in Lulea, Sweden, but did not make it. The band was touring in support of their new album, “Infected Nations”, which came out on Earache Records. The true tragedy is that this was the group’s best work to date, sounding like a cross between Slayer and Sepultura. The album was garnering significant press from the likes of KERRANG and Revolver, who were hailing the band for their return to classic thrash and Alexander will never see his true moment in the musical spotlight. Every once and while, a band emerges that truly deserves every bit of success that comes their way. Since  2002, Mastodon have been plugging away with their own brand of progressive metal without the aid of radio or mainstream press. These guys just did what they do best without listening to anyone else or giving a fuck about anyone but themselves.

Mastodon are true artists that treat everything they do as a piece of art. From their songwriting to their merch, everything they do is a form of artistic expression. The cover art for Mastodon’s latest opus, “Crack
The Skye”, is a breathtaking, thought provoking piece of artwork that makes you immediately want to pop in the album so you can hear the fucking brilliance of this record. The album cover stands out from a sea of shitty hip-hip and pop records that pollute the shelves at your local record shop.

Say what you want about him, his personal life or the drama that surrounds him, but Eminem is still the greatest white rapper to ever touch a microphone. I know a lot of hip-hop heads who are getting ready to hunt me down for even saying the words, but it’s true. I know it pisses people off that this white-boy from Detroit took over the game like Tiger Woods destroyed millions of old white guys to become the greatest golfer of all time, but it happened. Eminem’s quick flow and ability to take the shitstorm that is his life and use it to create great songs is what makes him the best. His new album, “Relapse”, chronicles Eminem’s battle with pills and turned out some of his best material. I know some people are a little pissed that the trademark humor isn’t in the forefront of this new album, but like any true artist, Eminem has created something dark, original and powerful. I think once everyone finds out that Santa isn’t real (guess the cat’s outta the bag now), they grab onto Halloween in their quest for an identity during the holiday season.  Or maybe it’s because on Halloween you’re supposed to dress up funny, so it’s the one day that all of us freaks can blend in.  Or maybe because it’s the only day that you’re supposed to take candy from strangers.  Anyway, there’s a ton of reasons to love Halloween, scratch that, there”s only 2 reasons, but they’re big ones, Tricks and Treats.  Either way, enjoy your holiday all you Sik Freaks, you deserve it.
